South Africa: "Amazing Grace" does it again.
Branden Grace is seemingly unstoppable at the moment. The South African followed up his triumph at last weekend's Joburg Open with victory at the Volvo Golf Champions. Grace defeated his two more illustrious compatriots Retief Goosen and Ernie Els in a play-off to seal his second win of 2012.
The final round in George, South Africa, could hardly have been more exciting. As well as Grace, Els and Goosen, a fourth local hero was also in contention in the form of Charl Schwartzel. While a bogey on the 17th saw Schwartzel lose valuable ground, however, the other three all ended the tournament on twelve under par.
In the resulting play-off, a birdie was enough for Grace, who only came through the European Tour's Qualifying School one month ago, to dash the hopes of his two rivals. "It is really nice to be able to say that I won a play-off against Ernie and Retief. I still cannot believe it," said Grace. "To win such a big event is a dream come true. That was the best tournament I've played so far."
Meanwhile, last week's winner almost triumphed again on the PGA TOUR. Johnson Wagner (USA) ended the Humana Challenge in La Quinta, California, tied in second place. Victory at the tournament, which boasts a prize purse of 5.6 million US dollars, went to America's Mark Wilson. After four rounds of the Palmer Course, Wilson emerged victorious with a score of 24 under par.
