The path that the 41st Ryder Cup would take soon became clear. On Friday morning, the Americans won the first session 4-0 in front of a frenetic home crowd – and ironically this was in the classic fourball match. This discipline had been a European domain in recent history. From this moment on, the defending champions were lagging behind and were under enormous pressure. This didn't change until the final score of 11-17.
It was the Americans' first win in eight years and only the second victory in the previous eight duels. For captain Davis Love III the victory was also personal satisfaction. Four years ago, he – through no fault of his own – as captain had to watch powerlessly as Team Europe transformed a 6-10 deficit into a triumphant victory at the "Miracle at Medinah" on the final day.
